At The Aquila School, sustainability is something pupils learn about, participate in and put into practice. From our youngest children discovering how to care for their environment to older students exploring sustainability through eco-literacy, leadership and hands-on experiences, we encourage pupils to understand the impact of their choices and their role as global citizens.

Early years & year 1 – Eco Bugs

Sustainability starts small

Environmental awareness starts with simple experiences. Through Eco Bugs, our younger pupils begin to discover the importance of caring for nature and the world around them.

Activities such as creating bug houses encourage children to observe living things, explore natural materials and understand that even small actions can help care for our environment.

Primary – Eco Warriors

Turning awareness into action

As pupils move through Primary, they are encouraged to take greater responsibility for the environment around them.

Through Eco Warriors, pupils have opportunities to share ideas, encourage positive environmental choices and play an active role in sustainability within the school community.

The experience also develops leadership, collaboration and a sense of responsibility — helping pupils understand that positive change often begins with everyday actions.

Secondary – Eco-Literacy

Understanding the world behind our choices

As pupils get older, sustainability develops from awareness and action into deeper understanding.

Through eco-literacy, students have opportunities to explore environmental issues, consider the impact of individual and collective choices and develop a greater understanding of their relationship with the world around them.

This encourages students to question, investigate and make increasingly informed and responsible choices.

Learning in action

Our Urban Farm provides pupils with opportunities to take sustainability learning beyond the classroom.

Through hands-on experiences, pupils can connect with growing and the natural environment while exploring the relationship between food, science, resources and the choices we make.

It creates a practical environment where sustainability can be seen, explored and experienced — bringing learning to life.

Students leading change

As students progress through Aquila, they are given opportunities not only to participate in sustainability but also to help lead it.

Our Sustainability Committee gives students a platform to contribute ideas, raise awareness and take action on environmental issues within Aquila and beyond.

It is another way in which pupils develop their voice, leadership and understanding of the role they can play in creating positive change

Small choices matter

Sustainability is not only about projects and programmes. It is also about the choices we make every day.

By encouraging pupils to care for their surroundings, think about waste and take responsibility for shared spaces, we help make environmental responsibility part of everyday school life.

Growing responsible global citizens

From an Eco Bug discovering the natural world to an older student taking the lead on sustainability, we want every pupil to understand that their choices matter.

By combining learning, practical experiences and student leadership, we help pupils develop the awareness and confidence to contribute positively to their school, their community and the wider world.
